Fine sandy beaches, excellent gastronomy, elegant hotels, golf courses, typical Basque villages, the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela, a vibrant nightlife and a casino make for plenty to do in Biarritz. Alongside Basque, French is spoken as a native language. The locals are especially open-minded and warm.
Traditional festivals take place throughout the year, and the atmosphere is international and exciting - for example at the Fête de Bayonne in August or the world-famous Sanfermines in Pamplona in July, easily and quickly reachable thanks to the proximity to Spain (25 km).
Biarritz lies in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department on the Atlantic coast of the French Basque Country. Besides the “Halles” quarter with its colourful markets and numerous restaurants and cafés, this surfing town of 25,000 inhabitants is home to the most beautiful beaches of the Bay of Biscay and an internationally renowned language school for learning French.
From the 73-metre-high lighthouse you have a spectacular view over the city and the Atlantic coast. In the city centre, the night turns into day in lively clubs and cult bars. The main surf season runs from August to October. During this time several surf festivals and competitions take place, each with its own unique charm.
